Photographer Sophie Gamand hopes to raise awareness and drive adoption through her project.

Pitbulls often get a bad rap when it comes to public perception. New York City-based photographer Sophie Gamand is hoping to change that with her photo series, “Flower Power, Pit Bulls of the Revolution”.

Where did the inspiration for this project come from, anyway? Well, it’s not exactly a revelation that pitbulls are normally portrayed as harsh, and often vicious or violent; Gamand recognized this prejudice, even in herself. Knowing it wasn’t fair to vilify an entire breed based on stereotypes, she brought her idea to life, choosing to portray the dogs in gentle and dream-like light.

All the pit bulls photographed for the series are available for adoption via three New York City rescue groups: Animal Haven, Second Chance Rescue and Sean Casey Animal Rescue. If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting one of these beauties, make sure you get in touch!

Gamand has also started a social media campaign to raise further awareness about the project. She’s inviting people to post pictures of their pets online with the hashtag so don’t be shy — join in for a great cause!
