Origin

The Beagi is a designer dog breed whose origins aren’t entirely clear.

Pedigree

The Beagi is a cross between a purebred Beagle and Corgi.

Food / Diet

When selecting a food to give your pooch the nourishment that he needs to thrive, opt for a brand that produces high quality canine-appropriate meals. You can feed your pet anywhere from ¾ cup to 1½ cups of a dry food that contains natural ingredients, but you can split this amount into two servings per day.

You can also give your Beagi a high quality canned dog food, but reduce the amount of dry food that you’re providing so that you can prevent unwanted weight gain. These dogs can overeat, so you need to be mindful of how much your pet is consuming. Talk to your vet if you have any questions at all regarding the best foods for your dog, as well as how much he should be eating.

In addition to good looks, Beagis have a wonderful personality.

Training

These smart dogs are also eager to please, but they can be stubborn and independent at times. As a trainer, you will need to be patient, consistent, and firm, without ever being harsh. Stick with positive training techniques that include rewarding good behavior with treats and praise.

The Beagi can be a bit of a challenge when it comes to training, and progress can be slow. He can even be difficult to house train. You can consult an experienced dog trainer to help you, but this breed might not be ideal for first-time dog owners. However, Beagis do make great pets for those who are already experienced with handling canines.

Weight

A small-sized breed, the Beagi weighs between 10 and 20 pounds.

Temperament / Behavior

The Beagi is known for being friendly, loving, and energetic. These dogs are also loyal and protective, and they get along well with seniors and children. When meeting new people or animals, they can be territorial, so it’s important to properly train and socialize your pet.

Your Beagi will want to be the center of attention, so be sure to include him in your family activities. Because these dogs prefer being with their human family and don’t enjoy being alone, you should be sure you have the time to devote to your pet before introducing a Beagi to your family.

Common Health Problems

Just like any other hybrid canine breed, the Beagi might end up inheriting some of the health conditions that most commonly affect its parent breeds. However, there is no way to predict an individual dog’s long-term health, many hybrid dogs are surprisingly healthy and hardy, and there is no guarantee that a Beagi will end up developing any of these health issues. Therefore, the best thing that you can do is simply be aware of the potential health problems that could occur, and work closely with your vet if symptoms arise.

Beagis may develop skin ailments, hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism, patellar luxation, Von Willebrand’s disease, ear infections, intervertebral disk disease, epilepsy, degenerative myelopathy, dwarfism, cystinuria, and patent ductus arteriosus.

Life Expectancy

The Beagi has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

Exercise Requirements

Regular exercise will be important for your Beagi, especially when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight and releasing his energy in a positive way. Taking your dog on brisk walks every day, letting him run around in your backyard or at the dark park, and giving him toys to play with while indoors will help keep him entertained and happy. These dogs also like swimming, as well as playing games like fetch, so interactive activities that you can enjoy with your dog are recommended.

The Beagi is known for being friendly, loving, and energetic.

Recognized Clubs

The Beagi is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, as it is considered to be a hybrid breed. However, this breed is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC) and the Dog Registry of America, Inc. (DRA).

Coat

The Beagi has a double coat that is soft, thick, and short. Shedding will be moderate, and grooming requirements will be moderate as well. Shedding can be kept under control by brushing your pet every other day, at a minimum, but be prepared to clean up dog hair around the house.

Puppies

The small Beagi will be a tiny, delicate puppy that will require gentle handling. If children will be interacting with your puppy, be there to supervise to make sure he doesn’t get hurt.

It’s also important to socialize and start training your puppy as soon as possible. This will ensure that he can grow up to be a friendly, calm, and confident adult who knows the rules and gets along with everyone.
