Origin

The Kromfohrlander (or the Kromi) is still a fairly new breed, having only been developed in Germany during the 1940s. This breed is descendant from a military mascot dog named Original Peter. The dog was found by American soldiers in France during the second World War and brought to Germany where he was lost. He was rediscovered by Ilsa Schleifenbaum who then used him to develop a new breed. Original Peter was bred with various terrier- and griffon-type breeds for about 10 years to create the Kromi. The breed was first recognized by the FCA in 1955 and remained largely a German breed until it was first introduced in America by Gene Cummings in 1997. In 2012, the Kromfohrlander was admitted into the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service.
