Petco Officially Pulls All Made-in-China Treats From Shelves

Three cheers for Petco! They no longer sell any made in China pet treats, which could pose a health risk to our furry friends.

As we reported last year, Petco had promised to pull all dog and cat treats that were made in China from their stores by the end of 2014. As of Monday, January 5, 2015 that promise has been made a reality. Yay!

Not only will you not find made-in-China treats in stores, but you also won’t find them for sale on Petco’s website.

The move comes after thousands of pets either died or fell ill after eating jerky treats that came from China since 2007. While the FDA was never able to find a direct link between the China-made jerky treats and the deaths and illnesses of so many of our furry friends, Petco decided that carrying the treats was no longer worth the risk it may pose to their health.

While the pet goods retailer had, for many years, not carried pet food produced in China, the decision to also cease carrying the treats seemed like a no-brainer.

“As a trusted partner for pet parents, we believe this is the right thing to do, and we’re proud to take this step in the best interest of pets,” said Jim Myers, Petco CEO. “What we feed our pets matters, and this milestone supports the company’s steadfast commitment to putting our customers, partners, animals and the communities we serve first.”

It goes without saying that we love our cuddly critters like family and hope that other pet good retailers will soon follow suit. Isn’t our pets’health and safety the most important thing of all? (We’d say the answer is a resounding “Yes!”)
