A Shared Congenital Disorder Brings Together a Boy and a Kitten

This family flew across the country to adopt a kitten for the best reason ever.

The reasons why people choose their pets are diverse, but, usually, it’s their appearance or a great personality that tips the scales. In Waylon’s case, it was his medical condition that led him to his furrever family.

This orange tabby kitten from Virginia was born with a very rare congenital deformity known as pectus excavatum, or caved-in chest. If left untreated, the condition would cause severe health issues, primarily concerning the furry patient’s lungs. But, in this lucky feline’s case, his pectus excavatum didn’t only bring him an expensive surgery and a tough recovery, but something wonderful as well.

Sherrie Carreno, who lives in San Francisco Bay Area, found Waylon’s story through a pectus excavatum support group on Facebook. Her son, Jake, was recovering from the invasive procedure himself, and the thought of adopting a pet that went through the same experience seemed like a perfect idea. If anyone could understand the trials and tribulations this little kitty had to go through it’s this Californian family- and vice versa!

However, when the feline-loving mom submitted the adoption application, she didn’t realize that the recuperating kitty was from Richmond, VA, but thought he was in Richmond, CA- an easy mistake to make, right? But although this meant that Waylon was 2,800 miles away from them, it didn’t sway this family from adopting him. By the point they realized they’d have to travel across the country, they’ve already fallen in love with him.

People from the Richmond Animal League, the rescue organization who took in Waylon and raised funds for his surgery, say this is their farthest adoption to date. The family came for the little four-legged survivor on February 17th, and the boy and the cat formed an instant bond. I guess nothing brings people and furballs together like going through same hardships, even when they’re thousands of miles apart!
